There are books, workshops, videos, tutorials, and more – 30 million Google results, in fact, and the sheer number of options might have you paralyzed with the fear of choosing the wrong thing. You might choose something, then invest the time and money to start learning, only to realize the resource you chose only teaches you how to log stuff to the console…
Have no fear – there’s a good option out there, and it’s the Big Nerd Ranch Beginning iOS Bootcamp. You’ll learn so much in the bootcamp that you’ll come out feeling like you can build any app you want.
I recently recommended this workshop to a friend who wanted to learn iOS. He had a little programming experience, but not much – he was a banker. He was concerned about whether he’d benefit from a coding bootcamp, and I told him that bootcamps are an excellent way to learn. You get the benefit of sitting in a distraction-free environment where you can focus entirely on learning the material. I suggested that he take the BNR iOS Bootcamp – which he did – and afterwards, I asked him how the class went. He told me, “it was awesome. I can’t thank you enough for recommending the class.” The class gave him the confidence to leave the banking world to do freelance iOS and build his own apps.
If you want to attend the bootcamp, you’ll want to make sure you already know another programming language of some sort so you’re not lost in class. The Big Nerd Ranch also recommends that you read their book Objective-C Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide before coming to class.
There are two things you’ll need to be willing to invest to attend this bootcamp: time and money. It’s a 7 day class and costs $5,200. Additionally, you’ll need to budget time and money to travel to their site, either in Georgia, California, or The Netherlands. The $5,200 fee does cover all your meals, lodging, and transportation to and from the airport. If you can afford it and are able to commit a week of your time, this is an excellent way to learn iOS, and it’s a great value. I wholeheartedly recommend it if you want to get started building your iOS apps. You’ll leave feeling like you can build anything you want.
